Urchfont By Any Other Name

The written word 'Urchfont' goes back at least 420 years, but the spoken name goes back even further. 'Font' derives from the Latin meaning 'spring', and 'Urch' may derive from the Anglo Saxon Name 'Eorich', 'Ear dric' or 'Eric', giving the meaning 'The Springs on the Land of Eric'. It has also been suggested that 'Urch' derives from 'erche' which is an old dialect word for 'deer', and the deer is still part of the village logo. Research to-date has revealed no fewer than 111 different spellings of Urchfont !

In 2000 it was decided to mark the Millennium by producing a book to record the Parish History. A Project Group was set up and a huge amount of research and data gathering was carried out, including collation and editing of text, maps and photographs, and interviews with many village residents in order to capture their memories. In 2001 'URCHFONT by any other name - A History of the Parish' was published.

The book can be purchased for £9 from Elaine Bancroft (Tel. 01380 848246) or Urchfont Community Shop & Post Office

The Changing Face of Urchfont.

This pictorial record of the parish was published in 2005 by the Urchfont Parish Trust, as a direct result of work on the previous history book (‘Urchfont by any other name’).

The publishers felt that it was important to make available a record of some of the large number of old photographs which could not be included in the original book for reasons of space.

This second book contains over 300 photographs of the Parish, many of them historical but with some modern- day photographs for comparison, and some reproductions of some historical maps.

The book costs £12, and is available from the Community Shop, Urchfont Manor and Sue Fowler 840031
